Emmanuel Chess Festival Saturday 28th September 2002, 2pm to 6pm Controller: Neill Cooper
39 people took part in this event, mainly Emmanuel members but also some friends and neighbours. Play took place in a quiet, competitive but friendly atmosphere. No-one lost all their games and only one player won all their games. That was Stephen Andrew who thereby became the Emmanuel Chess Champion. Even so, it was not all plain sailing for Stephen and in particular his game against Simon Petley, which I found the most exciting of the afternoon, could have gone either way up to the very last move. The best of the younger players also had to play the best of the adults, and gave them lots to think about. Two players vied for top place in the secondary school section, with Sophie Coates winning the U18 championship from Alex Troop on tie break (having defeated him in their head-to-head match), whilst Alex was the under 14 winner. The Junior section was even closer, with 3 players winning 4 of their 5 games. The U11 winner was Jocelyn Coates, who beat both the other primary school players who had 13 points (and only lost to a secondary school player). Ruth Cooper, was the under 9 winner whilst Jack Winterburn, the third player with 13 points, was the under 10 winner. Final scores (3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a loss) - players in bold were top for their year group.
In view of the popularity of the event we plan to
have a similar festival in the spring.
