Emmanuel Chess Festival Saturday 8th March 2003, 1.30pm to 5.30pm Controller: Neill Cooper
36 people from SouthCroydon took part in this event. Many of these had taken part in the first tournament, for others it was their first chess tournament. The junior event was part of UK Chess Challenge 2003, the biggest chess tournament in the world. We played 6 rounds and the final scores (3 points for a win, 2 for a draw and 1 for a loss) in the Juniors were as follows, with a Q showing players who qualified for the Surrey Megafinal. The crucial game was in round 5 when the two players with 4 wins from 4 games met, and Joshua Cooper prevaled over Alex Hesketh. A quick win in the last round gave him a straight 6 and the under 11 trophy. The best secondary school scores were back in joint 4th to 6th position.
